Ayyappa devotees, donning the sacred “maalai” (a bead necklace symbolizing their vow), embark on the arduous pilgrimage to Sabarimala, embodying the spirit of penance and spiritual discipline.
During Margazhi, the city of Chennai transforms into a cultural extravaganza, with numerous sabhas and concert halls hosting mesmerizing music concerts featuring renowned artists. The Madras Music Festival, a prestigious cultural event, attracts music connoisseurs and aficionados from across the globe, showcasing the rich heritage of Indian classical music. This influx of international visitors not only enriches our cultural tapestry but also bolsters our economy through tourism, as foreign visitors partake in the spiritual and artistic fervor of Margazhi, elevating India’s stature on the global cultural map.
As Christmas dawns, the atmosphere becomes even more joyous, with people coming together to celebrate the Nativity of Jesus Christ. The spirit of love, kindness, and compassion fills the air, as people exchange gifts, share meals, and spread joy. The message of Christmas, emphasizing the importance of unity, peace, and love, resonates deeply with the spiritual essence of Margazhi, creating a unique confluence of divine harmonies.
Less known, yet profoundly significant, is the esoteric practice of “Margazhi Muthamizh,” where the three facets of Tamil—Iyal (poetry), Isai (music), and Nadagam (drama)—are devotionally offered to the divine, echoing the ancient Tamil tradition of spiritual expression. The month also marks the onset of the northward journey of the Sun (the precursor to Uttarayanam), symbolizing the soul’s ascent towards enlightenment.
In culmination, Margazhi beckons us to surrender to the divine, to transcend the boundaries of creed and convention, and to immerse ourselves in the ocean of spiritual bliss. மார்கழி மாதம் தமிழ் நாட்காட்டியில் மிகப் புனிதமானதாகக் கருதப்படும் காலமாகும். இந்த மாதம் ஆன்மீக விழிப்பு உச்சத்தை அடையும் நேரமாக விளங்குகிறது. பக்திப் பாடல்கள், கோலங்கள், விரதங்கள், இசை, வழிபாடு ஆகியவை ஒன்றிணைந்து மனித மனதை உயர்த்தும் சூழலை உருவாக்குகின்றன.
மார்கழியும் இல்லங்களும்
மார்கழி காலையில் வீடுகளின் வாசல்களில் இடப்படும் கோலங்கள், வெறும் அலங்காரம் அல்ல. அவை:
- தெய்வீக சக்தியை வரவேற்கும் அடையாளம்
- இயற்கை, கணிதம், அழகு ஆகியவற்றின் சங்கமம்
- பக்தியின் மௌன மொழி
புள்ளிகள், கோடுகள், வளைவுகள் அனைத்தும் இறைவனை வரவேற்கும் ஒரு ஆன்மீக அழைப்பாக அமைகின்றன.
திருப்பாவை – வைணவ மரபு
ஆண்டாள் அருளிய திருப்பாவை மார்கழியின் ஆன்மீக முதுகெலும்பு.
இது:
- கண்ணனை எழுப்பும் பாடல் மட்டுமல்ல
- மனிதனின் உள்ளுணர்வை எழுப்பும் அழைப்பு
கோபிகைகள் பாடும் இந்த பாடல்கள்,
ஒற்றுமை, ஒழுக்கம், பக்தி, தன்னலமின்மை
என்ற மனித பண்புகளை வலியுறுத்துகின்றன.
திருவெம்பாவை – சைவ மரபு
மாணிக்கவாசகர் அருளிய திருவெம்பாவை,
அறியாமையின் இருளை கிழித்து,
சிவஞான ஒளியை மனித உள்ளத்தில் ஏற்றுகிறது.
இங்கு:
- சடங்கு முக்கியமல்ல
- அனுபவமே முக்கியம்
- “நான் யார்?” என்ற கேள்வியே மையம்
சைவமும் வைணவமும் – ஒன்றே உண்மை

மார்கழி காலத்தில் சென்னை:
- இசையின் தலைநகராக மாறுகிறது
- கர்நாடக இசை உலகமெங்கும் ஒலிக்கிறது
